SharePoint Workspace 2010 doesn’t synchronize my document library

The common error message is: The query cannot be completed because the number of lookup columns it contains exceeds the lookup column threshold enforced by administrator.

From my searches on internet I found out that this is a common issue. It seems that there is a limitation for SharePoint Online saying that if there are more than 8 lookup columns in the document library, SharePoint Workspace won’t synchronize it.

The problem is that my document library has only 7 lookup columns.

Error when creating a document set in a document library

Just to describe the situation better:

  • I have only a site collection
  • I have enabled the Document Sets site collection feature
  • I have created a couple of content types at site collection level (document content types and document set content types)
  • I have a Document Archive site created using the Document Centre site definition and a My Project site created using the Team Site definition
  • In both web sites I have added my content types into the default document libraries (Documents and Shared Documents) and then I have enabled the metadata navigation
When I’m trying to create a document set into My Project site’s Shared Document library everything is OK (so there is no problem with the field or with the metadata terms in the term store), but when I do the same operation in the Document Centre site’s Documents library I receive the following error message: Failed to get value of the “Documentation Language” column from the “Managed Metadata” field type control. See details in log. Exception message: Invalid field name.

I have contacted Microsoft Support for both issues and now I’m waiting for the resolution. As soon as I have them, I will update the post accordingly.

    Have you ever found a solution to the lookup columns issue? I’ve been avoiding the problem for the past 6 months but I might have no choice but to eventually start using work space.

      MS Support was able to provide a fix to the issue, after I decreased the number of the Look-up columns. The solution: to wait for SharePoint 2013 and SkyDrive Pro from Office 2013.

        Hi Denis, Have you had the possibility to verify that the look up columns limitation issue has been resolved with SkyDrive Pro and Office/SP 2013?

          Hi Joakim, I haven’t tried. I’m waiting for the upgrade of my Office 365 Subscription.
